Brief summary and personal reflection on the story
What can exist in boundary line between life and death? Fear? Hopelessness? Or gladness? And what do we have to do in that line? Here is a teacher who talks about that with his last student.
This book is written by the truth and the speaker is Mitch Albom, a famous sports columnist. He was not only a student but also a friend of Morrie Schwartz in University. He called Mitch as "Coach" and Morrie liked that. However, after having been experienced his uncle's death, Mitch made his living to accomplish everything and forgot his respected teach, Morrie. After 10 years passed, watching a Talk Show, he was surprised because he found his teacher who was a amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patient and had only a limited number of days to live. So Mitch visited his teacher's home every Tuesday and took last classes from Morrie. They had each topics in classes and the topics were facts about life and death. During these classes, Mitch realized many things like the importance of delightful life, positive side of death, real value of life, and real means of success from the words of Morrie. Finally, in fourteenth class, Morrie passed away near his wife and the last student.
I am most struck with the class that they talked about death. In this class, Morrie said everybody knows that others will die but they don't that they
will also die and when people know the right way to live and die, they can be happy. In attendance part, he said similarly.
"So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your like is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning."
What wise saying! I feel sympathy heartily on this saying and think about how to make valuable life. Before I read this book, I made my live to success in the future so I had many cases to give up present happiness. From now on, I will spend more time to talk, laugh and enjoy with people who I love with this thinking, “If I am not happy now, also cannot be happy tomorrow.". Also I will enjoy watching baseball just in case it not disturb my study. Because nobody knows when I die and I don't want to regret about my life which don't do what I want to do.
Although the main subject of this book is the Morrie's point of view about life and death, I am attracted by the relationship between the teacher and the student. I know this book contains many golden sayings about the main subject but I think the best golden saying is Morrie's first saying, "Why aren't you calling me as a coach?". When I was doing my shopping at a market, I met my middle school teacher. I thought she couldn't remeng m me because she has taught many students. However when I greeted her, she said to me ,"Hyeon Ji, do you do well study up to now?". She was still kind to her student. I was grateful to her and touched by her mind that loves her student.
In this book, there is Henry Adams's saying. "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." The influence can be bad or good. Up to now, I have learned from teachers who have good influences. Especially, when I was a second-year student in middle school, my homeroom teacher seemed not interested in her students but she loved us more than other teachers. So when one student had a problem, she tried to solve that with her best effort. I think I have to visit her and talk about life. I hope she doesn't have any sickness until that day.
will also die and when people know the right way to live and die, they can be happy. In attendance part, he said similarly.
